I'm pretty sure this is the correct procedure.
- make the fix.
- Create the path
- Apply the patch
- build the thing.

See build failure at secondlife/viewer#5020 for context, GCC really doesn't like the existing code so I added a pending PR to the repo as a patch until it's fixed properly upstream.
