fix(deps): revert several dependency updates to fix VM tests

Commit 98932bf broke VM tests, but it's
unclear exactly which part of that change broke the tests, and reverting
it would be complex anyway. Instead, let's just "go back in time" a bit
and move forward more carefully (see
28af3a0).
