Karin Frank is an expert for ecological and social-ecological modeling with a PhD in Mathematics and a habilitation in Applied System Sciences. Since 2010, she is heading the Department for Ecological Modeling (OESA) at the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ in Leipzig (Germany) and holding a Professorship in the same field in joint appointment with the Institute for Environmental Systems Research at the University of Osnabrück (Germany). She is active in research and teaching in these fields.

The UFZ as OMF Founding Member bundles all activities in terrestrial environmental modeling, earth observation and data science in an own Research Unit (‘Modeling and Monitoring’) with an Integration Platform with more than 120 scientists, which Karin Frank is recently co-chairing. Focus of the platform is on the development of modeling concepts, methodologies, tools, and workflows needed for the analysis of terrestrial environmental systems and the development of sustainable solutions for assuring multifunctionality in landscapes under climate risks and transformative land use change. This includes the development of a new generation of terrestrial environmental models which enable (i) large-scale simulations and robust predictions at a resolution which matches the operational needs of the targeted decision-makers, (ii) the use of novel data from multi-scale earth observation (esp. remote sensing), and (iii) the fulfilment of the FAIR principles. In particular, the platform works on a modular simulator of multifunctionality aspects in landscapes under transition (LandTrans) to support climate adaption in various sectors of landscape management. The respective model system will be open-source in an OMF-like architecture. Platform members are involved in various model intercomparison and benchmarking projects. Members of Karin’s department contributed substantially to the development of community standards for the description of social-environmental models (esp. ODD, ODD+D), the use of models for effectively influencing decision-making in real-world contexts, or the operationalization of social theories of human behavior in models for social-ecological systems.
